A 4-Step Guide to Talking Blue Light with Patients

A 4-Step Guide to Talking Blue Light with Patients

If you watch the news, read industry publications, or are active on social media, you’ve undoubtedly seen the flood of attention given to blue light of late. Ongoing research connecting blue light exposure to various vision and health effects has placed it at the forefront of both medical and media conversations. But is the blue light concern real, and if so, what’s the best way to discuss it with your patients? The answer to the first question is a resounding yes! The answer to the second question can be addressed in four simple steps. 1. Start at the Source Blue light will be an unfamiliar subject to many of your patients. So they’ll need some background on how we go to where we are. Historically our exposure to blue light was limited to sunlight. However, the explosion of device usage, coupled with a switch to energy-efficient lighting has resulted in blue light exposure at unprecedented levels. You could ask your patients to put down their smartphones and tablets, but you’d probably have more luck asking for the keys to their home. So you’ll need to make them clearly aware of the potential impacts of blue light, which brings us to step number two. 2. Identify...

Crizal Prevencia Kids No-Glare Lenses Now Available On VSP Formulary

Just in time for the back-to-school season, Essilor’s groundbreaking Crizal® Prevencia™ Kids No-Glare lenses are now available on managed vision care plans offered by VSP. Crizal Prevencia Kids are the first No-Glare lens specially designed for children to selectively block harmful blue light and UV while allowing beneficial light to reach their eyes. Some light is, of course, necessary for children’s vision. Blue-turquoise light helps kids see more clearly, regulates their sleep cycles and supports healthy memory, mood and brain functions. This makes the selective filtering protection of Crizal Prevencia Kids No-Glare lenses essential. “Children are more vulnerable to the dangers of light, and at home and school, kids are exposed to more blue light from television, computers, video games and digital devices than ever before,” said Howard Purcell, O.D., F.A.A.O., Dipl., and senior vice president of customer development, Essilor of America. “We’ve worked closely with managed care providers to enhance children’s access to the Crizal Prevencia Kids technology, because we recognize how important this superior protection is for the healthy development of their eyesight,...

Crizal Prevencia No-Glare Lenses Now Available on VSP Formulary

After successfully launching as the first lenses to offer selective filtering protection against harmful blue light, Essilor’s award-winning Crizal® Prevencia™ No-Glare lenses are now available on managed vision care plans offered by VSP. While certain types of light are essential to vision, other types can be damaging. UV light is a major risk factor for serious eye diseases like cataracts. Blue-violet light is a major risk factor in the onset of age-related macular degeneration, the leading cause of severe vision loss and legal blindness in adults older than 60. It is important, however, to not block all blue light to the eyes because blue-turquoise light is beneficial, supporting healthy sleep cycles, memory and cognitive function. Crizal Prevencia No-Glare lenses are designed to selectively filter out harmful blue-violet and UV light while letting beneficial blue-turquoise light pass through. “We’re proud of the success of Crizal Prevencia lenses and have worked closely with managed care providers to ensure the groundbreaking technology is more accessible to our ECP’s and all of the patients they serve,” said Howard Purcell, O.D., F.A.A.O., Dipl., and senior vice...

Optometrist Prespective by Harvey Yamamoto, OD

Optometrist Prespective by Harvey Yamamoto, OD

I’m a huge fan of remodeling one’s office very 3-5 years. Anyone can swing a paint brush or roller for beginners. A new coat of paint can spruce up the old walls. Two years ago my staff talked me into remodeling the office. I listened to their plans and upon hearing their complete makeover – I honestly balked at the idea. They wanted to retile the waiting room for starters. Then take out the flooring in 3 exam rooms and the kitchen. What? Are they nuts? The expense of installing wood flooring was more than what I had budgeted for. What they did not know was that I knew we had been laying one tile floor on top of one another for the past 3 upgrades. Our floors were high enough which made this project a major one to tackle. The staff then volunteered their husbands to do the work at night after their work was done. They would work for $10/hr. Hey, I couldn’t resist. My wife and I went shopping and purchased a large truckload of tiles, grouting, wood flooring materials, tools, etc. The boys came after work on day #1 and began to chisel out the flooring in the waiting room. Hours later, very little progress was being made. I went home and brought back a small air operated flooring...

Patients Tell HOYA, Looking for Relief from Blue Light Fatigue

Patients Tell HOYA, Looking for Relief from Blue Light Fatigue

HOYA Vision Care recently commissioned a consumer research study to test market messaging options with eye care patients. “Strategies for Keeping Purchases at Independent Practices: Prescribing for Blue Light Overexposure” is the title of the study results summary report released today that summarizes the research findings and offers independent ECPs easy to implement tactics. The science behind HOYA’s product development is complex; however the benefits to patients are very concrete. HOYA’s customers, independent ECPs, need tools to simply share the environmental concerns we have in our society today and then prescribe a solution to their patients. People have very real, chronic symptoms brought on by over exposure to blue light and, together with the doctor, we can help them. The study HOYA conducted, results, and tools will help ECPs help their patients as well as build their individual brands. Respondents in the study shared with HOYA: They had either never heard of blue light or only associated it with sleep patterns, rather than eye health Acknowledged that blue light can cause macular degeneration, though such terms were viewed as scare tactics They would listen to their...
Hoya Vision Care Puts An End To The “Blue Light” Blues

Hoya Vision Care Puts An End To The “Blue Light” Blues

Data from the Vision Council show patients most desire scratch resistance as the quality they want most in their eye glass lenses. News outlets from USA Today to Popular Mechanics have all run stories on the negative effects of blue light emitted from back lit devices on our eyes, overall heath, and especially on sleep patterns and fatigue. The original launch of Recharge was the first AR treatment to offer blue light filtering. Today, in response to patient demands and environmental need, HOYA Vision Care is announcing the launch of their next generation of blue light filtering AR treatment- Recharge EX3™ AR treatment. “The initial launch of Recharge was a big success” stated Barney Dougher, President of HOYA Vision Care, NA. “We have since been able to further improve the blue light filters in Recharge. In addition we enhanced the scratch resistance properties so now Recharge is at the same level as Super Hi-Vision EX3 AR treatment; which has a Bayer rating higher than glass. If I own an independent practice I’m really excited about Recharge. Everyone who walks into your practice should leave with Recharge EX3. The benefits to your patients will differentiate you from the...

Put A Stop Harmful Blue Light Rays

Put A Stop Harmful Blue Light Rays

With considerable consumer interest seen by ECPs in select markets across the United States, Essilor of America, the nation’s leading manufacturer of optical lenses, is now offering Crizal® Prevencia™ No-Glare lenses nationwide. Based on new research, these new lenses offer breakthrough technology that selectively protect wearers’ eyes from harmful blue light and UV rays. Blue light, part of the visible light spectrum with wavelengths between 380-500 nanometers (nm), is emitted not only by the sun but also by artificial light sources such as LEDs, computers, some smart phones, and tablets. While a particular range of this light [465-495 nm] is beneficial and aids in the function of the sleep/wake cycle, memory, and cognitive performance, there is a specific band of blue light that is found to have a harmful effect on the retina and is a risk factor for the onset of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). “Our daily lifestyles depend more and more on computers and hand-held digital devices, so it’s no surprise that we’re seeing consumer interest in vision protection against the most dangerous wavelengths in the blue light spectrum,” said Howard Purcell, O.D., F.A.A.O.,...
